I don’t know about you, but some days, chocolate for breakfast just sounds delicious. But responsible adults also have to keep in mind things like protein, a minimal amount of sugar and a breakfast filling enough to keep you going until your lunch break (if and when that happens).
Consider this smoothie a compromise between your inner child who wants to eat Cocoa Puffs with chocolate milk for breakfast and your reasonable side who wishes you could be satisfied with eating a salad or a sensible bowl of oatmeal. It’s packed with protein, thanks to the protein powder and the peanut butter, but also basically tastes like you’re drinking a peanut butter cup milkshake. It’s incredible.
As for protein powder, I found I really needed this near the middle of my elimination diet. For whatever reason, nothing I could eat sounded appealing to me, so I started feeling lethargic and a little strange. A few of these smoothies straightened me out in no time. I used a brand called Living Harvest Tempt Hemp Protein Powder, which is vegan, raw, gluten-free and also free of soy — not an easy thing to find. You can use whatever protein powder makes you happy, but I’d recommend using chocolate- or vanilla-flavored powder in this recipe.
This smoothie is already vegan and gluten-free, but can be made paleo by using almond butter instead of peanut butter. Any way you make it, it’s a great way to start off your Hump Day.
